Bali Arts Festival 2019
If you’re in Bali this June and July, then you mustn’t miss out on one of the country’s biggest events of the year. Bali Arts Festival or in Bahasa, Pesta Kesenian Bali (PKB) will is currently taking place at the Taman Werdhi Budaya Arts Centre in Denpasar until mid-July 2019.
First launched in 1979, the Bali Arts Festival is Indonesia’s longest-running festival. The opening ceremony on the 15th of June was a magnificent and grand event, a street parade featuring hundreds and thousands of participants in spectacular traditional costumes and make-up, officiated by non-other than Indonesia’s President, Joko Widodo. Indonesia’s First Lady was also present, accompanied by 15 minister’s wives to the event.

This year’s theme is “Bayupramana” which translates to “the strength of wind and air”. The opening parade took place around the Bajra Sandhi monument in Denpasar – a symbolic gesture which honours the struggles and the rich history of the Balinese people and was attended by over 4,000 participants. The parade was also attended by ambassadors of nine regencies and cities in Bali, ISI contingent Denpasar, SMK 3 Sukawati Gianyar, participants from outside the regions and abroad, ISBI Tanah Papua, Department of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports of Sumenep Regency, East Java, and those from the People’s Republic of China.
This is your chance to come by with your family and loved ones to enjoy a full month of daily performances showcasing the island’s rich heritage as well as performances from across the archipelago. There are various open stages, auditoriums and outdoor pavilions showcasing traditional and contemporary dances, shadow puppetry, music compositions, traditional music and gamelan recitals, vocal, musical and dance collaboration and youth competitions.
While you’re there, do browse through exhibitions and stalls selling handicrafts, textiles, paintings and sculptures and of course, irresistible local snacks and delicacies.
In total, there will be 220 performances – seven performances daily, 11 foreign art ambassadors and 21 artistic performances from various regions in the archipelago along with 38 types of competitions, 10 workshops and more. The closing ceremony will be another much-awaited event with a series of breathtaking live performances and traditional ballet at one of the open stages from 8.00pm onwards.
