Set in a sea of terraced rice paddies that gradually slope down to the glimmering Indian Ocean, Villa Mandalay provide a colorful glimpse into traditional life in the Balinese countryside. Three contemporary Balinese-style pavilions are arranged around a 25-meter swimming pool, forming a magnificent focal point to the villa. A rustic bamboo pavilion surrounded by water gardens at the end of the pool offers unobstructed views and makes a lovely setting for sunny breakfasts and candle-lit dinners. Living areas and bedrooms are adorned with an eclectic collection of Indonesian artwork, including avian-themed paintings, carved wooden statues from Kalimantan, and ethnic artifacts.
With the option of renting either four, six, or seven bedrooms, Mandalay offers plenty of flexibility for groups of friends and families. At the same time, the lush lawns and dramatic setting also make the villa an ideal venue for weddings of up to 250 guests. Mandalay’s unique charms extend to a six-hole pitch and putt golf course set into lower gardens, a Finnish-style sauna overlooking a lotus pond, and a mezzanine-level home theatre with 62-inch satellite TV and DVD player. A team of friendly and professional staff includes a talented chef who prepares meals from an extensive suggestion menu of Western and Asian dishes, with delicious Balinese-themed menus a specialty. If you wish to explore the island, a car and driver are also on hand (extra charges apply).
Villa Mandalay is located in the Seseh Tanah-Lot area, on Bali’s southwest coast in Canggu, and nearby attractions include the rugged black-sand beach of Seseh, the picturesque (and challenging) world-class Nirwana Bali Golf Course, and the beautiful sea temple, Pura Tanah Lot. Bedrooms at Villa Mandalay
All bedrooms are air-conditioned, with ceiling fans, king-size beds furnished with crisp white linens, and a flat-screen TV with DVD players. Walk-through dressing rooms lead to stately ensuite bathrooms tiled in grey andesite stone, with twin vanities (except for the studio), statue-filled alcoves, and customized amenities.
Two generously sized master bedrooms flank the living room, identical but for their artwork. Ceilings are gracefully tiered and softly illuminated in the evenings, and long wooden desks nestle in window alcoves with garden outlooks. Each has a timber deck encircled by hedges and flower boxes and furnished with a table, chairs, and daybed. Large bathrooms include separate his-and-hers vanities and oversize terrazzo bathtubs.
Villa Mandalay’s four guest bedrooms are arranged around the swimming pool, opening onto timber decking at the front and gardens at the back via sets of glass doors. Two of the rooms have views over the lush rice fields and are fitted with attractive window seats from which to enjoy them. The other two rooms have window alcoves with built-in desks overlooking tropical gardens.
Tucked away below the main villa, the studio is the most private of the bedrooms (although slightly smaller than the others). It has a beautiful timber deck, furnished with sun loungers, set on a thriving lotus pond. This room is adjacent to the sauna.
Living Areas at Villa Mandalay
Indoor Living Areas
The villa’s entrance is dominated by a large Palimanan stone frieze flanked by elegant Javanese statues, leading to the fan-cooled living and dining pavilion with its wooden floors, soaring ceiling, and evocative Indonesian artwork. A glass-topped dining table seats 12, with an additional small table seating four. Large alcoves on either side have built-in sofas upholstered in earthy hues, and coffee tables are strewn with magazines.
A bar at the back is equipped with an iPod dock and surround-sound system, while ethnic artifacts are displayed against a red feature wall. A guest washroom lies to one side, and on the other is a kitchen equipped with everything required to cook up a storm. The steep sloping rattan ceilings of the mezzanine media room create an atmospheric air-conditioned space for reclining on mattresses and cushions and watching the 62-inch TV and movies with surround sound. Shelves are filled with DVDs and novels.
Outdoor Living Areas
Steps lead down from the living room to the 25-meter swimming pool tiled in greenstone and surrounded by sun loungers shaded by stylish parasols. Walk along the timber deck to the atmospheric bamboo bale pavilion in water gardens flourishing with brightly-hued calla lilies and colorful fish. The bale offers stunning rice-terrace views stretching towards the ocean, furnished with a dining table, eight chairs, and a comfortable rattan lounge suite. Descending to the lower level and adjacent to the studio bedroom, the aroma of cedarwood awaits in a full-sized Finnish-style sauna with a lovely garden outlook and a separate shower room.
The whole property is ringed with flourishing foliage, from frangipani to palms and birds of paradise flowers. The six-tee pitch and putt golf course is laid out on perfectly manicured lawns but gives the sensation of being right in the middle of the rice fields. A thatched bale (pavilion) at the far side of the garden provides a place for a peaceful respite.
Villa Mandalay is an idyllic spot for weddings and other special events with verdant sweeping lawns fringed by lush tropical gardens, a stunning backdrop of Bali’s famous rice fields, and an absolutely private setting.
We can recommend expert event organizers, florists, decorators, and caterers so you can focus on relaxing and celebrating with your guests.
The chef at Mandalay Villas is at your service to prepare daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The villas offer an extensive suggestion menu of delicious meals featuring Asian and western dishes to cater to all tastes, with an excellent selection of vegetarian and children’s options. Make sure to try pepes ikan (fish steamed in banana leaf) and Bebek betutu (a Balinese specialty of duck cooked in herbs). The chef can also grill up a fresh seafood feast on the barbecue and tailor meals to accommodate any special dietary requirements or specific requests. A stay is not complete without sampling one of the Balinese set menus, served buffet style.
To make the most of the kitchen and give staff time to shop, it is a good idea to plan lunch and dinner selections the evening before. Groceries and beverages are charged at cost price with a 20% handling fee subject to service and tax at the prevailing rate. Guests will be requested to provide grocery money in advance, and the staff will do the shopping and keep receipts for reference.
The family-friendly advantages of a villa holiday are many, including access to your own private facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently, and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus – and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.
Mandalay Villas are great for families with children, who will love the lawns and gardens, swimming pools, and a chance to play golf. Those with toddlers will need to be vigilant due to numerous fishponds and water features.
The option of renting both villas in the complex allows larger, extended families to vacation together or even a group of friends traveling with their families.
The team of friendly staff will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost).
Although the equipped kitchen allows you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily do this for you – talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the Villa Manager or chef, and they will take care of the rest. Pancakes by the pool for breakfast? Chicken fingers for tea? No problem. The chef can customize all meals to suit the children’s taste buds.
